The português was introduced under Manuel I as Portugal's premium gold denomination, calibrated to circulate internationally alongside the Spanish excelente and other high-value trade coins flooding Atlantic markets after 1500. João III inherited both the coin and the empire it financed — spice routes, Brazilian brazilwood contracts, fortresses from Hormuz to Malacca. His second type at Lisboa refined the design but kept the extraordinary fineness that made the português acceptable at face value from Antwerp to Goa without assay.
At nearly 35 grams of near-pure gold, individual pieces represented roughly a month's wages for a skilled Lisbon craftsman. Surviving examples in any condition are genuinely scarce; most were melted as bullion values shifted across João's three-decade reign.
