The Portuguese quinas (five shields bearing bezants) and castle bordure are clearly rendered in the Gothic heraldic style typical of Manueline-era coinage. A fleur-de-lis surmounts the royal crown above the shield. The circular legend reads IOANNES:3REX:PORTVGALIE:AL:D:GVI C:N:C - TI:AP L-R, identifying João III as King of Portugal, the Algarves, and lord of various overseas territories. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle and a plain outer rim, characteristic of high-denomination Portuguese gold coinage of the period. |
