The cross is characteristic of the Portuguese crusading orders and prominently associated with the Age of Discovery coinage. The surrounding circumferential legend in Latin reads the Constantinian motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer'), separated by a cross at the beginning. The lettering is rendered in a Gothic script consistent with early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold issues. |
