Portugal's spice monopoly generated bullion surpluses that required instruments of payment large enough to settle major commercial debts without counting out stacks of smaller denominations.
João III's second type reflects mint reforms introduced after 1525 that standardized the extraordinarily high fineness — .9896 — placing this among the purest gold coinages struck anywhere in Europe at that moment.
