| Reverse description | A large bold cross of Jerusalem (cross potent) occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Each quadrant formed by the arms of the cross contains a small pellet or annulet device. The cross is rendered with substantial relief typical of hammered gold coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading the Constantinian motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, with a small crown above the inscription. The overall design is austere and powerfully symbolic, consistent with the devotional and imperial pretensions of the Portuguese crown. |
