Obverse description Central crowned royal arms of Portugal, displaying the quartered shield with castles and bezants (quinas), enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. A broad outer legend in Latin capital letters runs along the periphery, reading the full royal titulature of João III. The overall design is characteristic of the large-flan hammered gold coinage of Manueline-Joanine Portugal, with bold relief work and a finely detailed armorial composition filling the broad flat field.
