Central device depicts the heraldic arms of the city of Elbing (Elbląg): a quartered shield bearing a Maltese cross and ermine pattern, surmounted by a spread-winged angel as crest, all supported by elaborate baroque scrollwork. The mint-master's initials W and VE appear flanking the base of the shield. The circular Latin legend surrounding the central device reads: MONETA ARGENTEA CIVITATIS ELBINGENSIS 1651, with the date 1651 and a cross-pattée separator incorporated into the legend. The półtoratalar — literally "one-and-a-half taler" — was an denomination peculiar to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, struck in limited runs at provincial mints like Elbląg to satisfy regional commercial demand rather than any centralized monetary program. By 1651, Jan II Kazimierz was already navigating the catastrophic aftermath of the Cossack uprising under Khmelnytsky, and crown finances were under severe strain. That a heavy silver piece of this weight was struck at all that year speaks more to Elbląg's semi-autonomous merchant economy and its Baltic trade obligations than to royal initiative.
