The półtoratalar — literally "one-and-a-half taler" — was an denomination peculiar to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, struck in limited runs at provincial mints like Elbląg to satisfy regional commercial demand rather than any centralized monetary program. By 1651, Jan II Kazimierz was already navigating the catastrophic aftermath of the Cossack uprising under Khmelnytsky, and crown finances were under severe strain. That a heavy silver piece of this weight was struck at all that year speaks more to Elbląg's semi-autonomous merchant economy and its Baltic trade obligations than to royal initiative.
