Catherine I's poltina of 1726 occupies an awkward moment in Russian monetary history. Peter the Great had died the previous year, leaving a monetary system still mid-reform and a court consumed by succession politics — Catherine, a Lithuanian-born former servant with no administrative training, ruled effectively through the Supreme Privy Council. The leftward-facing portrait on this type was abandoned after a single year; 1727 issues reverted to a rightward orientation, making the left-portrait variety a one-year anomaly tied to an unstable early reign.
