Batory's półtalar coinage from Olkusz reflects the administrative reorganization of the Polish crown mint system following his contested election in 1576 — he was chosen by the szlachta over the Habsburg candidate Maximilian II, and establishing a coherent royal coinage was among his earliest assertions of authority. Olkusz, sitting atop rich silver-bearing lead deposits in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, was the natural choice for heavy silver production.
Kop#542 and Kop#543 represent distinct die variants within the type. Attribution between them frequently turns on the rendering of the crown above the shield and punctuation details in the legend.
