The pitis was Brunei's workhorse coinage for petty trade across a 250-year span, circulating through the sultanate's pepper and camphor markets at a time when Spanish silver dollars dominated regional wholesale exchange but remained entirely impractical for small transactions. Tin-lead alloy was the logical material for that role — cheap, locally workable, and sufficiently unattractive to hoarders that it actually circulated.
The attribution window of 1618–1868 reflects genuine scholarly uncertainty: multiple sultans used nearly identical honorific titulature, and die-link analysis has not yet resolved the full sequence.
