Fernando I's reign was defined by three costly wars against Castile, and the monetary system bent under the pressure. The pilarte — a denomination peculiar to his reign — was struck in billon of declining fineness as the wars dragged on, a debasement that Fernando pursued more aggressively than any Portuguese king before him.
