Fernando I's reign was defined by three costly wars against Castile, and the monetary system bent under the pressure. The pilarte — a denomination peculiar to his reign — was struck in billon of declining fineness as the wars dragged on, a debasement that Fernando pursued more aggressively than any Portuguese king before him. The Lisbon mint was the primary producer, operating under conditions that make die consistency across the series notably poor.
Gomes Fe.07 is among the more frequently encountered varieties of the type, though surviving examples in problem-free condition are genuinely scarce.
