| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned royal cipher composed of an interlaced double 'H' (for Henri) surmounted by a royal crown, with a fleur-de-lis pendant below the monogram. A circular Geneva counterstamp punch, applied in 1592, is visible to the left of the royal cipher, partially overlapping the field. The circumferential Latin legend reading '+ HENRICVS. III. D: G. FRAN. ET. POL. REX' encircles the design, identifying the issuer as Henry III, King of France and Poland by the grace of God. The coin shows significant wear and surface patination consistent with circulation use. The overall design is typical of the hammered coinage of the French royal mint in the late sixteenth century. |
