Friesach pfennigs were among the most commercially important coins in central Europe during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, circulated so widely across the Adriatic hinterland and into the Balkans that "Friesacher" became a generic term for silver currency in regional trade documents. The type was struck by multiple issuing authorities simultaneously — archbishops, dukes, and bishops all produced compatible coinage — making definitive attribution of undetermined pieces genuinely difficult rather than a cataloging convenience.
The 1210–1241 window encompasses the reign of Duke Bernhard von Spanheim, under whom Carinthian minting rights were actively contested.
