Friesach pfennigs were among the most commercially dominant coins in the medieval Adriatic and Balkan trade networks from the late twelfth century onward, copied by regional lords across Styria, Carinthia, and the Croatian littoral precisely because merchants demanded them. By Rudolf von Hohenegg's tenure the type had been in continuous production for over a century, and distinguishing archiepiscopal strikes from imitations — even contemporaneous ones — remains a persistent attribution problem.
