Rudolf von Hohenegg served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1284 to 1290, a tenure marked by persistent conflict with the Habsburgs following Rudolf I's aggressive consolidation of Austrian territories after his victory over Ottokar II at the Battle on the Marchfeld in 1278. Friesach, located in Carinthia, had been a major silver-minting center for the archbishopric since the twelfth century — the "Friesacher Pfennig" type was once the dominant trade currency across the central Alpine region, though by the 1280s it had been substantially displaced by competing issues from Aquileia and the rising influence of Venetian commerce.
