Peter I von Reichenstein served as Bishop of Basel from 1286 to 1296, a period when the bishopric was navigating persistent tensions with the city's burghers — pressure that would eventually culminate, over the following century, in the city effectively wresting administrative control from episcopal authority. These thin silver pfennigs were the everyday transaction coin of the Upper Rhine region, produced in quantities sufficient for local markets but not for large-scale commerce.
