| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing bust of a bishop wearing a mitre, depicted in a schematic, stylized manner consistent with medieval hammered bracteate-style coinage. Two croziers flank the effigy, each oriented outward with the crook facing away from center, positioned to the left and right of the figure respectively. The design is rendered in low relief within the irregular, pinched flan typical of small medieval ecclesiastical issues. |

Peter I von Reichenstein served as Bishop of Basel from 1286 to 1296, a period when the bishopric was navigating persistent tensions with the city's burghers — pressure that would eventually culminate, over the following century, in the city effectively wresting administrative control from episcopal authority. These thin silver pfennigs were the everyday transaction coin of the Upper Rhine region, produced in quantities sufficient for local markets but not for large-scale commerce.
