Ottokar II acquired Styria through the 1260 Peace of Vienna, which ended the Austro-Styrian war and left him controlling a bloc of territories stretching from Bohemia to the Adriatic. These bracteate-style pfennigs were struck at Graz as part of his effort to consolidate monetary administration across his newly expanded domains. His assassination at Dürnkrut in 1278 — at the hands of Rudolf of Habsburg's forces — ended both the reign and this coinage simultaneously.
