Henry IV of Istria-Carniola issued these bracteate-style pfennigs during a period when the march was caught between competing Babenberg and Andechs dynastic pressures. The Gutenwerth mint — situated on an island in the Wörthersee — was one of the few active minting sites in the region during this window, giving these pieces an unusually localized production footprint rare even among provincial Austrian coinage of the 13th century.
