Zofingen held the unusual right to strike small pfennig coinage as a municipal authority — a privilege increasingly anomalous by the nineteenth century, when Swiss cantonal and later federal monetary consolidation was steadily erasing such local prerogatives. These gold restrikes were produced for collectors rather than commerce, almost certainly after the 1850 establishment of the Swiss federal franc rendered the original copper issues obsolete as currency.
