Frederick II of Austria — "the Quarrelsome" — issued bracteate-style pfennigs across his territory during a reign defined by open warfare with his own overlords, including Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire. The Stein mint in Oberkrain (modern Kamnik, Slovenia) was among the southern production centers he relied on as he expanded and defended Austrian influence in the alpine south. Frederick died at the Battle of the Leitha in 1246 without an heir, extinguishing the Babenberg dynasty entirely.
