Berthold V, a Bavarian-born member of the Andechs-Meranien dynasty, held the patriarchate from 1218 until his death in 1251 — one of the longer and more politically turbulent tenures in Aquileia's medieval history. His coinages were struck across multiple mints as the patriarchate asserted temporal authority over a contested stretch of the northeastern Italian march. Windischgrätz, now Slovenj Gradec in modern Slovenia, was among the secondary mint towns operating under patriarchal license during this period.
