Berthold V ruled the Patriarchate of Aquileia from 1218 to 1251, though coinage attributed to his reign is conventionally bracketed earlier to account for transitional issues. The patriarchs of Aquileia held both ecclesiastical and secular authority over a strategically fractious territory between the Kingdom of Italy and the Duchy of Carinthia, and their mint at Gutenwerth — on an island in the Drava River — operated as a distinctly northern outpost of Italian episcopal coinage traditions.
The Gutenwerth mint was among several competing patriarchal striking sites, each serving different regional circulation zones along the Alpine trade corridors.
