Bernard of Carniola served as Duke of Carinthia from 1202 until his death in 1256, one of the longer tenures among the Sponheim dynasty's final generation of rulers in the region. This pfennig type belongs to the so-called Tschatesch coinage — a regional bracteate-adjacent friesacher tradition named after a minting center in the southern Alpine territories — issued at a moment when the Friesacher Pfennig system still dominated trade across the southeastern march lands.
The CNA Cp2 designation places it among the earliest attributable issues of Bernard's reign.
