Beschrijving voorzijde A stag passant to the left with head turned back in the field, accompanied by three rings disposed about the figure. The central device is enclosed within a double circular border, between which runs a wreath or chain of rings forming a decorative collar around the perimeter. The composition reflects the heraldic tradition of the Duchy of Carinthia, rendered in the bold, simplified style characteristic of Austrian hammered bracteate-influenced coinage of the early thirteenth century.

Beschrijving keerzijde A mitred bishop's bust facing forward, flanked on either side by a tower, each surmounted by a cross. Above the episcopal bust appears an eight-petaled rosette, itself accompanied by three small rings arranged above and two below, lending the composition a structured, symmetrical quality. The entire design is contained within a double beaded circle border. The imagery likely alludes to the ecclesiastical authority associated with the Duchy of Carinthia and reflects the Romanesque decorative vocabulary prevalent in early thirteenth-century Central European coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Bernard II ruled Carinthia from 1202 until his death in 1256, and his bracteate-style pfennigs from the Landstraß mint reflect the fragmented monetary output typical of the Carinthian duchies during the Hohenstaufen period. Landstraß — modern-day Kostanjevica na Krki in Slovenia — was a relatively minor ducal mint, and issues attributable specifically to it survive in small numbers. The CNA Cn8 attribution places this firmly within Castelin's systematic organization of Austrian medieval bracteates.
