Struck during the reign of Beornwulf of Mercia, this penny dates to a period when Mercian dominance over southern England was collapsing under sustained pressure from Wessex. Beornwulf was defeated and killed by the East Angles in 826, making issues from his reign among the briefest and most politically turbulent of any Mercian king. The London mint was the most productive of the Mercian minting centers, yet surviving coins attributable to this narrow window are genuinely scarce.
Spink 932A is a rare variety, and examples in any grade are infrequently offered.
