The West African Currency Board, established in 1912 to manage coinage across British West African territories, conducted trial strikings ahead of new issues to test composition and die quality before committing to full production runs. This piece precedes the circulating 1/10 penny series and was almost certainly struck at the Royal Mint. Trial pieces of this board are sparsely documented in contemporary mint records, and most known survivors trace back to official collections rather than commercial channels.
