An outer circular legend in large, bold Roman capital letters reads + HECBEARHT REX, naming Ecgberht as king. The lettering is broadly spaced around the full circumference of the flan, which is irregular and slightly clipped at the edge, as is typical of hammered Anglo-Saxon coinage of this period. |
