| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central inner circle containing a radiate cross-pattée motif with five limbs issuing from a central pellet, forming a prominent geometric device characteristic of the Group II pennies. The inner circle is raised and clearly defined, separating the central device from the surrounding legend. An outer circular legend in large, bold Roman capital letters reads + HECBEARHT REX, naming Ecgberht as king. The lettering is broadly spaced around the full circumference of the flan, which is irregular and slightly clipped at the edge, as is typical of hammered Anglo-Saxon coinage of this period. |
