Eadwig's reign lasted just four years before Mercia and Northumbria rebelled and handed power to his younger brother Edgar in 957, leaving him king of Wessex alone until his death in 959. The coinage accordingly divides into pre- and post-957 issues, with the two-line type produced across the full reign but attributable mint by mint to shifting political allegiances. North 724 represents one of the more sparsely documented penny types of the mid-tenth century — surviving examples are genuinely scarce, and die-linked pairs across collections remain few.
