Obverse description Diademed bust of King Coenwulf facing right, rendered in the bold, stylised manner characteristic of Mercian coinage of the early ninth century. The king's facial features and diadem are depicted with shallow relief typical of hammered Anglo-Saxon pennies. A circular beaded inner border frames the effigy, with the royal legend distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait conveys regal authority despite the limitations of contemporary die-cutting technique.
