正面描述 Central facing bust of Archbishop Ceolnoth rendered in a bold, stylised Anglo-Saxon manner, set within a beaded inner circle. The face is depicted frontally with schematic features including large round eyes, a prominent nose, and a simplified crown or mitre atop the head. The surrounding field between the inner beaded circle and the outer border carries the Latin legend reading the archbishop's name and title. The entire design is characteristic of the Canterbury ecclesiastical coinage tradition of the mid-ninth century, with deeply impressed lettering in insular majuscule forms.

附加信息

Ceolnoth served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 833 until his death in 870, a tenure that spanned the most destructive phase of Viking raiding on England — including the sack of Canterbury itself in 851. The ecclesiastical minting privilege exercised here was not exceptional for the period; Canterbury had operated its own dies since at least the late eighth century. What makes Group I attributable as a distinct issue is primarily die-linkage work done by modern scholarship, separating early from later productions within his long archiepiscopate on stylistic and metrology grounds.
