Obverse description Central field features a plain cross pattée within a beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four equal quadrants. The royal legend is arranged in two arcs around the inner circle, reading + BELDRED REX CΛNT, identifying the issuer as Baldred, King of Kent. The lettering is executed in a bold, angular Saxon majuscule characteristic of early ninth-century Kentish coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly dumpy, typical of the hammered penny coinage of this period. The overall design follows the Two-Line or cross-and-legend type associated with the southern English kingdoms of the Mercian supremacy era.
