Surrounding the inner circle, the royal legend is arranged in two concentric registers separated by a beaded border. The inscription reads the king's name and title in debased Latin letterforms, including retrograde and variant Anglo-Saxon characters. The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of Anglo-Saxon hammered coinage of the early tenth century.
