Obverse description Central field features a small cross pattée within a raised inner circle, dividing the field. Surrounding the inner circle, the royal legend is arranged in two concentric registers separated by a beaded border. The inscription reads the king's name and title in debased Latin letterforms, including retrograde and variant Anglo-Saxon characters. The coin is struck on an irregularly shaped flan typical of Anglo-Saxon hammered coinage of the early tenth century. The overall design is austere, with no royal effigy, reflecting the Small Cross type's emphasis on epigraphic rather than portrait design.
