| Reverse description | Plain hammered flan, heavily patinated and worn, displaying a schematic cross with four leaf- or vesica-shaped elements in the angles, a motif characteristic of Utrecht episcopal deniers of the mid-thirteenth century. The design is boldly if crudely struck, with the foliate or lozenge-shaped ornaments clearly visible between the arms of the cross. The peripheral Latin legend TRAIECTVM, identifying the mint city of Utrecht, runs around the coin, though portions are weak or missing due to the irregular flan and characteristic strike quality of this hammered issue. |
