This piece dates to the final months of Victoria's reign — she died in January 1901 — and the Australian pattern coinage of this period reflects the administrative scramble surrounding Federation, which took effect on 1 January of that same year. The newly established Commonwealth required its own coinage identity, and several pattern pieces were explored before the Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth mints settled on their eventual sovereign and half sovereign production runs.
KM#12 patterns from this transitional moment are genuinely rare; most were never intended for circulation and survived only in official collections or through subsequent deaccessions.
