Struck during the interregnum following the death of Bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria in 1688, the Chapter of Saint-Lambert exercised its traditional right to issue coinage during a vacancy in the episcopal see — a privilege dating to medieval canon law. The six-year gap before Johann Louis of Elderen's installation in 1694 was unusually prolonged, making Sede Vacante issues from Liège of this period more numerous than those of shorter vacancies, yet still far less common than regular episcopal coinage. The crossed keys identifying chapter authority rather than a named bishop place this squarely within that administrative limbo.
