Reverse description Central crowned quartered coat of arms of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, displaying in the four quarters: upper left Bouillon, upper right Franchimont, lower left Looz, and lower right Hornes, with the arms of Liège at the center on an escutcheon. The circular Latin legend, introduced by a five-petalled rosette, reads MONETA·NOVA·CAPLI·LEOD·SEDE·VACANTE followed by the date 1694, indicating this coinage was struck during a vacancy of the episcopal see by the cathedral chapter.

Additional information

Struck during the interregnum following the death of Bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria in 1688, the Chapter of Saint-Lambert exercised its traditional right to issue coinage during a vacancy in the episcopal see — a privilege dating to medieval canon law. The six-year gap before Johann Louis of Elderen's installation in 1694 was unusually prolonged, making Sede Vacante issues from Liège of this period more numerous than those of shorter vacancies, yet still far less common than regular episcopal coinage. The crossed keys identifying chapter authority rather than a named bishop place this squarely within that administrative limbo.
