The surrounding circular legend, separated by pellet stops, reads PHIL IIII D G REX HISP INDIAR Zc, identifying Philip IV as King of Spain and the Indies by the grace of God. The County of Burgundy — the Franche-Comté — remained under Habsburg rule long after the Duchy of Burgundy had passed to France, a geographic anomaly that made it a persistent flashpoint.
