Additional information

Jhabua was a small Rajput-ruled state in the Malwa region whose coinage authority was tightly constrained by its subsidiary alliance with the British. The Gopal Singh issues date to the reign of Rao Gopal Singh and are among the more distinctive products of a state that rarely commanded numismatic attention. The overstruck nature of this piece is the critical detail — the host coin beneath determines much of the scholarly interest, and attribution of the undertype can shift both the date range and the political reading considerably.
