Charles Edzard was the last ruling Count of East Frisia, and his reign ended in 1744 with his death and no male heir — at which point Prussia, under Frederick the Great, immediately annexed the territory under a long-dormant inheritance claim. The örtgen circulated during precisely this terminal decade of Frisian autonomy, a minor billon piece issued by a dynasty that had already lost most of its political leverage to the Estates.
