Above the bust, a ram leaps left with its head turned back to the right, representing the zodiacal sign of Aries, the celestial protector of Syria. The reverse legend identifies Antioch as a metropolis and Roman colony, with value marks Delta-Epsilon (indicating the octassarion denomination) and S-C (Senatus Consulto) distributed in the fields. The composition follows the well-established civic coinage iconography of Antioch on the Orontes. |
