| Beschrijving voorzijde | A marten in full stride toward the left occupies the central field, with a six-pointed star above its back and a second star or pellet below. The design is enclosed within a beaded border. The surrounding circular legend reads REX + SCL AVONIE, denoting the King of Slavonia, with letters separated by small cross stops. The hammered flan gives the piece its characteristic irregular outline. |

V. István (Stephen V) ruled Hungary and its provinces for just two years before dying at age 33 in 1272, likely from illness contracted while fleeing his own son Ladislaus, who had allied with rebellious magnates against him. Slavonian provincial coinage of this brief reign is consequently scarce by reign-length alone. The ÉH#14 attribution places this firmly within the medieval Hungarian corpus catalogued by Lajos Réthy.
