The Yuezhi were pushed out of the Gansu corridor by the Xiongnu around 176–160 BC, spending the following century migrating westward through Bactria before consolidating into the confederation that produced issues like this one. Sapalbizes is one of the poorly documented rulers within that confederation, known almost entirely through numismatic evidence — no textual source names him with certainty. The coinage itself reflects a hybrid monetary tradition, drawing on degraded Bactrian Greek weight standards as the confederation settled into territories once controlled by Greco-Bactrian kings.
