| Beschrijving keerzijde | An eagle with wings closed stands left atop a thunderbolt, its head turned back to the right in the characteristic Ptolemaic reverse type derived from the coinage of Ptolemy I Soter. A cornucopia (sometimes depicted bound with a royal diadem) appears in the upper field to the left or right of the eagle, symbolising royal abundance and divine favour. The Greek legend ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, meaning 'of King Ptolemy,' is arranged in the field flanking the eagle, a formulaic inscription standard across Ptolemaic bronze denominations. The design is executed in the robust, somewhat schematic style characteristic of high-volume hammered bronze production of the period. |
