The surrounding legend TOLOSA CIVI, denoting the city of Toulouse as the place of issue, runs around the periphery in Carolingian majuscule script, introduced by a cross pattée. The execution is characteristic of Aquitainian provincial mint work, with irregular letter spacing consistent with hand-hammered production of the 845–848 period. |
