Obol Nikaia

Phokis operated an unusual federal mint — coins struck not by a single city but by the Phokian League collectively, an arrangement that became politically fraught during the Third Sacred War when the Phokians seized Delphi and melted Apollo's treasury to pay mercenaries. This obol predates that catastrophe, issued during the period of legitimate federal coinage before 356 BC rendered the Phokian name synonymous with sacrilege across the Greek world.
